Journey Overview

Gonorrhoea Treatment

#1 Book an Appointment

If you tested with us, you can usually book directly for treatment.

If you tested elsewhere, a consultation will first be required so that one of our clinicians can review your symptoms, medical history, and test results. Bringing evidence of your positive result is recommended where possible.

#2 Receive Treatment

If treatment is clinically appropriate and safe to proceed, you will be asked to attend the clinic for treatment. This commonly involves an intramuscular antibiotic injection in line with current treatment guidance.

#3 Test of Cure

You will need to re-test for gonorrhoea 14 days after treatment to confirm that the infection has cleared.

Eligibility

Prior/Repeat Use

Repeat testing or a test of cure may be recommended following a previous gonorrhoea infection, persistent symptoms, suspected treatment failure, or risk of reinfection.

w

Mr Aaron Williams saw us while we were visiting London from the US and he treated us well, with compassion and professionalism. Seeing him helped put us at ease for the rest of our trip, which ended up being great.

I had a copper coil removal yesterday with Dr Praveen Jayadeva. If you are at all nervous about an iud fitting or removal, I couldn't recommend this clinic enough. I had a very painful experience at a different clinic that made me really scared about the removal procedure. They really take the time to talk you through what's going to happen and what type of pain relief options you have. They were so friendly and comforting (both the doctor and the amazing assistant) and procedure was so quick. They even offer you tea and biscuits afterwards. Really fantastic and professional clinic!

I had a coil done here. It was an amazing experience, really worth the money paid. The doctor took the time to go through the process and all the options in detail. I felt prepared and well cared for. I had numbing gel and spray and also gas and air. The actual coil fitting was less then 5 minutes. I felt a little discomfort, but the gas and air managed this very well. The team were all very supportive and caring. My coil lasts for 5 years, I'm very happy with my experience. Could not recommend enough.

Dr. Malu was able to help me fully understand and put into context my concerns surrounding HPV, which at times can feel like a confusing subject. His ability to listen and understand my concerns with empathy and without judgement was very helpful. I am grateful for the expertise and care given by Dr. Malu and the staff at his clinic. The team provides a very professional and comfortable experience.

Fantastic and caring team from booking process, reception, appointment and billing. Went for a coil removal. They had ultrasound and gas for pain management (when I checked it seemed they were the only clinic that offered this!!). 100% recommend. Especially if you’re getting a coil, want to make sure you do it with a top professional team. I inserted it elsewhere and it was a barbaric procedure for me, insanely painful and just awful. So save yourself unnecessary trauma/pain

I had such a great experience at Clarewell Clinic. I was extremely nervous about the pain before my copper IUD fitting, but Dr Praveen Jayadeva explained everything clearly throughout the appointment and made me feel completely comfortable. I was given pain relief and the fitting was honestly so much easier than I expected — I barely felt any pain at all. Yasmin was also incredibly lovely and reassuring throughout. I’m genuinely so happy I chose Clarewell and would definitely recommend them. 10/10.

FAQs

What do you offer for Gonorrhoea treatment?

Gonorrhoea treatment usually involves antibiotics prescribed in line with current clinical guidelines. In many cases, this includes an intramuscular ceftriaxone injection.

Additional antibiotics may sometimes be recommended depending on symptoms, co-existing infections (such as chlamydia), previous treatment, or laboratory findings.

Your clinician will advise on the most appropriate treatment approach based on your individual circumstances.

Should I tell my partners that I am receiving Gonorrhoea treatment?

Yes, it's crucial to inform all recent sexual partners if you've been diagnosed with gonorrhoea so they can also get tested and receive treatment if necessary. This helps to prevent the spread of the infection and can also prevent it from being passed back to you.

How effective is Gonorrhoea treatment?

Gonorrhoea treatment is usually highly effective when appropriate antibiotics are used and treatment guidance is followed correctly.

Because antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea is increasing globally, follow-up testing may sometimes be recommended to confirm the infection has cleared.

It is important to avoid sexual contact until you and any partners have completed treatment and any advised abstinence period.

Are there any side effects of Gonorrhoea treatment I should be aware of?

Antibiotics used to treat gonorrhoea can sometimes cause side effects, although many people tolerate treatment well.

Possible side effects may include:

• Pain or soreness at the injection site
• Nausea or stomach upset
• Diarrhoea
• Allergic reactions (rare)

You should discuss any medication allergies or previous antibiotic reactions with your clinician before treatment.

How does Gonorrhoea treatment differ for pregnant women?

Gonorrhoea treatment during pregnancy is carefully selected to be safe for both the pregnant person and baby.

Recommended antibiotics used for gonorrhoea are generally considered safe during pregnancy. Your clinician will advise on the most appropriate treatment and whether any additional follow-up testing is recommended.

Is there any effective home treatments for Gonorrhoea?

There are no effective home treatments for gonorrhoea. Antibiotics are the only proven method to cure the infection. Using home remedies instead of medical treatment can delay effective treatment and increase the risk of complications.

How long does the Gonorrhoea treatment take to work?

The symptoms of gonorrhoea usually improve within a few days after starting treatment. However, it's important to complete the entire course of antibiotics to ensure the infection is fully eradicated. If symptoms persist after completing treatment, you should contact your healthcare provider.

Are there any factors that can influence the effectiveness of Gonorrhoea Treatment during menopause?

Menopause itself doesn't directly influence the effectiveness of gonorrhoea treatment. However, hormonal changes during menopause can affect the body's response to infections and healing processes. It's important to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider to ensure the most effective treatment approach.

What happens if I have symptoms after finishing my Gonorrhoea treatment?

If you still have symptoms after finishing your gonorrhoea treatment, it's important to contact your healthcare provider. You may need additional testing or treatment if the infection hasn't fully cleared or if there's another issue that needs to be addressed.

Is Gonorrhoea Treatment failure possible? If so, what is the course of action?

Although gonorrhoea treatment is usually successful, treatment failure can occasionally occur, particularly due to antibiotic-resistant strains or reinfection.

If symptoms persist or repeat testing remains positive, further assessment, additional laboratory testing, and alternative antibiotic treatment may be required.

Is a follow-up test/visit required after completing my Gonorrhoea treatment?

Follow-up testing (often called a test of cure) may be recommended in some situations, including throat gonorrhoea, pregnancy, persistent symptoms, or concerns about antibiotic resistance.

Your clinician will advise whether repeat testing is needed and the most appropriate timing for this.

Will my partner also need Gonorrhoea treatment?

If you've been diagnosed with gonorrhoea, it's likely that your partner will also need treatment to prevent reinfection and to stop the spread of the infection to others. They should be tested and treated even if they don't have symptoms.
