Journey Overview

Ultrasound-guided coil removal (also known as complex coil removal) is a safe procedure used when a routine removal is unsuccessful, such as in cases where coil threads are missing.

Typically completed in one appointment, with minimal recovery time.

#1 Pre-Appointment Questionnaire

To ensure enough time to discuss any questions or concerns, we ask you to fill out a simple questionnaire before your appointment.

#2 Consultation

During the consultation, we will address any concerns and discuss your pain relief options, as well as your contraceptive plans moving forward.

#3 Optional HPV/STI Testing

If you would like an HPV or STI test before the procedure, please let us know when booking. These tests can be conducted at the same appointment to ensure a seamless process.

#4 Transvaginal Ultrasound

A transvaginal ultrasound will be performed to locate the position of your coil. If the coil is located, we will proceed with the removal. If the coil cannot be seen, we will consider the possibility of it being expelled unnoticed and may refer you for an MRI.

#5 Administer Pain Relief

We offer several options for pain relief during the procedure, including local anaesthetic gel, gas & air, or a cervical block, to ensure your comfort throughout.

#5 Procedure

Using longer forceps designed for complex removals, we will retrieve the coil. You may be asked to cough as the device is gently removed. The coil will then be disposed of safely.

#6 Aftercare Discussion

After the procedure, we’ll make sure you’re feeling well and discuss any next steps, including contraceptive options. For detailed aftercare instructions, please refer to our aftercare page here.

We begin by first scanning the uterus to confirm the position of the coil. Once we have confirmed the location of the coil, we will use specialist instruments to enter the uterus (whilst using local anaesthesia) and attempt to remove the coil.

Does the ultrasound guided coil removal hurt?

It can be mildly painful to have the coil inserted or removed. Our specialists will walk you through what to expect and how to be prepared during the consultation. You may ask any questions you may have and then discuss ways in which to make the procedure more comfortable.

We also offer a local anaesthetic which is administered in a tube and is a very clear jelly like substance. Whilst this does not guarantee the procedure will be pain free, it can help to reduce some of the discomfort.

Whilst it can be uncomfortable to have your coil removed, we try to do our best to make it as smooth as possible.

We also use different methods of analgesia to make the removal process more comfortable. You can choose from local anaesthetic spray, local anaesthetic gel or entonox (gas and air). All of this will be discussed with you before we proceed with the procedure.

This includes offering you highly experienced clinicians in the field of Sexual & Reproductive Health and a combination of local anaesthesia.

Mr Aaron Williams saw us while we were visiting London from the US and he treated us well, with compassion and professionalism. Seeing him helped put us at ease for the rest of our trip, which ended up being great.

I had a copper coil removal yesterday with Dr Praveen Jayadeva. If you are at all nervous about an iud fitting or removal, I couldn't recommend this clinic enough. I had a very painful experience at a different clinic that made me really scared about the removal procedure. They really take the time to talk you through what's going to happen and what type of pain relief options you have. They were so friendly and comforting (both the doctor and the amazing assistant) and procedure was so quick. They even offer you tea and biscuits afterwards. Really fantastic and professional clinic!

I had a coil done here. It was an amazing experience, really worth the money paid. The doctor took the time to go through the process and all the options in detail. I felt prepared and well cared for. I had numbing gel and spray and also gas and air. The actual coil fitting was less then 5 minutes. I felt a little discomfort, but the gas and air managed this very well. The team were all very supportive and caring. My coil lasts for 5 years, I'm very happy with my experience. Could not recommend enough.

Dr. Malu was able to help me fully understand and put into context my concerns surrounding HPV, which at times can feel like a confusing subject. His ability to listen and understand my concerns with empathy and without judgement was very helpful. I am grateful for the expertise and care given by Dr. Malu and the staff at his clinic. The team provides a very professional and comfortable experience.

Fantastic and caring team from booking process, reception, appointment and billing. Went for a coil removal. They had ultrasound and gas for pain management (when I checked it seemed they were the only clinic that offered this!!). 100% recommend. Especially if you’re getting a coil, want to make sure you do it with a top professional team. I inserted it elsewhere and it was a barbaric procedure for me, insanely painful and just awful. So save yourself unnecessary trauma/pain

I had such a great experience at Clarewell Clinic. I was extremely nervous about the pain before my copper IUD fitting, but Dr Praveen Jayadeva explained everything clearly throughout the appointment and made me feel completely comfortable. I was given pain relief and the fitting was honestly so much easier than I expected — I barely felt any pain at all. Yasmin was also incredibly lovely and reassuring throughout. I’m genuinely so happy I chose Clarewell and would definitely recommend them. 10/10.
