Testing alongside Chlamydia, we are able to offer same day Gonorrhoea testing and results in our clinics.

In those who engage in unprotected oral/anal sex (and are experiencing symptoms), we will also be able to take an additional oral/rectal swab to test for Gonorrhoea.

This of course will depend on various factors and will be discussed in your appointment.

Furthermore, we use PCR technology when looking for the DNA of the virus. This means that even the smallest amount of virus can be detected from the sample making it a highly reliable and useful test.

How do you test for Gonorrhoea?

A urine sample is required for male patients, and a high-vaginal swab (self taken) is required for female patients. Oral, rectal and eye swabs are also available if the clinician believes this is appropriate for you. Samples are processed using PCR technology to locate the presence of the bacterial infection.

When should I get tested for Gonorrhoea?

We recommend waiting 14 days after sexual contact before testing. If you are experiencing symptoms or your partner has tested positive, please get tested as soon as possible.

It is recommended to get tested on a regular basis if you engage in unprotected sexual intercourse with multiple partners, or if you change partners frequently.

Will I need to be examined?

An examination will be offered if you are experiencing symptoms, this allows the clinician to assess the extent of your symptoms and ensure there are no any secondary complications present.

Although an examination may be recommended, this is entirely your decision. Your clinician will explain everything clearly.

It is essential that you practise safe-sex whilst waiting for your results. Your clinician will advise you on any extra precautions depending on your situation, your symptoms and if you are taking treatment.

What do my Gonorrhoea test results mean?

The results will be either NOT Detected (i.e. negative) or DETECTED (i.e. positive).

If your test result is NOT Detected this means there is no Gonorrhoea infection present and you do not require treatment.

If your test result is Detected this means you have a Gonorrhoea infection present in your body and require treatment.

What happens if my Gonorrhoea test is positive?
