Vestibular papillomatosis treatment

Whilst it is only really after seeing you that we can make sure that you are eligible for treatment, submitting the questionnaire (with pictures) will give us a very good idea of your eligibility.

We only see patients from the age of 18 and above at our clinic.

Those with uncontrolled arrhythmia, hypotension (less than 90/50 mm Hg), or uncontrolled hypertension, and those who have had a stroke within the last 6 months are advised against having hyfrecation.

Hyfrecation is not recommended If you have an implantable defibrillator or a pacemaker.

If you are unaffected by the above conditions, hyfrecation can be safely undertaken as long as the vulval skin and mucosa are healthy. Occasionally, we may have to treat any underlying bacterial, viral or fungal infections (if present) before hyfrecation can be performed. If you are on your period, you can still have hyfrecation treatment as long as the bleeding is not heavy and your VP can be seen.

Vestibular papillomatosis (VP) can be removed using Hyfrecation if it is affecting your relationships or wellbeing. It is important to understand that having VP poses no risk to your or your partners’ health.

Although the removal of VP is typically permanent, there are rare instances where VP can reoccur.

The appearance of Vestibular papillomatosis (VP) often leads to dissatisfaction among patients, impacting their self-esteem.

The presence of large papillae can be mistaken for genital warts, causing concern for patients and unnecessary worry for their partners.

On occasion, patients may only become aware of VP after significant life events such as contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI), discovering their partner's infidelity, or experiencing intense guilt from cheating on their partner. In certain cases, women may request the removal of VP due to the distressing memories it evokes and the subsequent anxiety it causes.

There are a few benefits to having Vestibular papillomatosis (VP) treated, these include:

• Cosmetic relief: some women with VP are not happy with the way that VP looks and this can affect their mental wellbeing.
• Improved confidence: some women with VP can feel embarrassed about their vulva as a result of having VP. By having it removed, this can increase their self-confidence.

Not everyone with VP will be bothered by its appearance. If it is not affecting your mental health you do not need to have your VP removed.

The treatment for Vestibular papillomatosis is a straightforward procedure that can be scheduled according to your convenience. However, we recommend taking ample time to carefully consider your decision to undergo treatment, ensuring that it aligns with your personal wishes and preferences.

There are no home remedies that have been shown to be effective at treating Vestibular papillomatosis as it is not something that needs to be treated.

It is strongly advised against attempting any home remedies, such as physically removing, burning, squeezing or popping the papules, or using over-the-counter remedies for Vestibular papillomatosis (VP). Engaging in such practices can lead to scarring, as we have observed in patients who have resorted to these methods to remove VP.

If you notice any new lesions on your genitals, it is important to see a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis.

We recommend that you do the following before your appointment:

• Shower on the day of your appointment to reduce the risk of infection.
• Have a meal in the morning of the procedure.
• Take 2 paracetamol tablets, 1 hour before your appointment time for pain relief.

We recommend that you drive or use public transportation to attend your appointment and to get home. Cycling is not recommended.

You should be able to return to your normal day after the procedure, as long as your job is not physically demanding.

You can bring a partner, friend or family member to your appointment.

However, if you feel that you would rather not bring someone to the appointment, rest assured that our staff are here to support you and make you comfortable in any way possible. Clarewell Clinics is a safe space.

You do not need to make any special arrangements for after your procedure. However, if you would feel more comfortable, you may request a family member, friend, or partner to accompany you on the way home.

We recommend that you drive or use public transportation to get home. Cycling is not recommended.

You will need to check with your healthcare insurance provider & policy if they cover treatment for Vestibular papillomatosis. We highly recommend getting approval in writing to avoid any miscommunication with your insurance company.

In most cases, patients pay for their procedure out of pocket.

After you have arrived, we will invite you in for the initial consultation.

Once we have examined you, we will proceed to prepare you for the procedure (as long as you have booked in for same day treatment). This will involve going through the consent form, taking any pre-procedure pictures and applying the numbing cream in privacy.

After letting the numbing cream settle for approx. 30-45 minutes, we will confirm the total numbness of the skin and proceed to remove the lesions.

After the procedure, we will offer you aftercare advice and provide you with an aftercare pack with some items to help with the recovery.

Your clinician will confirm the total numbness of skin before undertaking the procedure.

Please alert your clinician if you do feel pain or discomfort. You are able to have more local anaesthetic, and take a break if needed.

Yes, absolutely you can. Please let us know at the time of your booking (or upon your arrival) so that we are ready to accommodate your wishes.

You may experience a little soreness at the operated site. This is completely normal and standard painkillers can help with this. You are able to continue with your daily life as soon as you leave the clinic.

Most discomfort that you may feel in the operative area should disappear within a day or two. This will of course vary depending on the extent of the lesions that were treated.

It is advised to abstain from sex and avoid masturbation until healing is complete (approx. 1-2 weeks). Having intercourse during the healing process can increase the risk of infection, scarring or bleeding.

Your clinician can sometimes see a residual lesion that you may not be able to identify. As such, all patients are offered a follow-up appointment within 4-6 weeks after their procedure. This will also give you a chance to ask any further questions that you may have.
