Vestibular Papillomatosis: Is It Itchy?

If you’ve noticed small, skin-coloured bumps around the entrance to your vagina (the vulva), you might be wondering what they are. One common and harmless cause is Vestibular Papillomatosis (VP)—a benign (non-cancerous) variation of normal anatomy that can sometimes cause concern.

A frequent question we hear is, “Can VP be itchy?”

What is Vestibular Papillomatosis (VP)?

Vestibular Papillomatosis presents as small, soft, finger-like projections or smooth papules located around the vestibule—the area just inside the vaginal opening.

These bumps are symmetrical, non-tender, and not caused by infection or HPV. They are a normal anatomical variant, not a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

So, is Vestibular Papillomatosis itchy?

In most people, VP causes no symptoms. The papillae are usually asymptomatic and are often discovered incidentally during an examination.

Occasionally, however, itching or irritation may occur, though this is usually due to external factors rather than the VP itself. Possible causes include:

  • Irritation: Friction from tight clothing, shaving, sexual activity, or use of perfumed washes and wipes.
  • Concurrent conditions: Vulval itching is more commonly caused by thrush (Candida), bacterial vaginosis, or contact dermatitis.
  • Psychological factors: Anxiety and heightened awareness can amplify sensations of itching or discomfort.

If the area becomes itchy or sore, it’s important to rule out other causes before assuming VP is responsible.

What to Do If You Experience Itchiness with Vestibular Papillomatosis

If you’re experiencing itching in the vulval area and have VP, try these simple measures:

  • Gentle Hygiene – Cleanse with warm water only or a mild, fragrance-free wash. Avoid douching or scrubbing.
  • Loose, Breathable Clothing – Opt for cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting or synthetic garments.
  • Avoid Irritants – Skip scented soaps, wipes, and laundry products that can aggravate the skin.
  • Soothing Emollients – Apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser (e.g., paraffin-based or petroleum jelly) to calm irritation.
  • Check for Other Causes – Persistent itching, redness, or discharge warrants review by a specialist to exclude infections or dermatological conditions.

When to Seek Professional Help

You should arrange a consultation if:

  • You’re unsure whether the bumps are VP or another condition (e.g., genital warts).
  • The area is persistently itchy, painful, or inflamed.
  • There are new changes in appearance or symptoms such as discharge or bleeding.
  • The appearance of the bumps is causing anxiety or distress.

At Clarewell Clinics, our Genital Dermatology (Lumps & Bumps) service offers both in-person and online consultations. We can:

  • Examine the area to confirm whether the findings are consistent with VP.
  • Rule out other causes of vulval irritation.
  • Offer practical advice or treatment where appropriate.

To begin, complete our Pre-Appointment Questionnaire.

For patients requesting same-day Hyfrecation, photo submission is required for review and quotation before booking.

Treatment Options

As VP is a normal variation, treatment is not required. However, the appearance or mild symptoms can be bothersome. In that case, we can discuss options such as Hyfrecation — a safe, minor procedure that uses low-level electrical current to remove surface tissue under local anaesthetic.
Recovery is typically quick, with minimal discomfort or scarring.
