Fordyce Spots Treatment on the Labia

Noticing unexpected bumps or changes in the genital area can understandably lead to anxiety or uncertainty. Many patients tell us they have searched online for answers, only to feel more confused by conflicting information. If you have noticed small, pale or yellowish bumps on your labia, you may be seeking clear and reliable information about Fordyce spots and whether treatment is an option.

From a medical perspective, Fordyce spots are very common and entirely harmless. However, we also recognise that something can be medically benign and still cause discomfort, worry, or impact confidence. Whether your concern is reassurance about your health or dissatisfaction with the appearance or texture of the skin, having accurate, evidence-based information is the first step towards feeling in control.

What are Fordyce spots?

Fordyce spots are enlarged sebaceous (oil) glands that are visible on the surface of the skin. While sebaceous glands are usually associated with hair follicles, Fordyce spots occur on hairless or mucosal skin, which is why they are commonly seen on the genital area.

In female anatomy, they are most frequently found on the labia majora (outer lips) and labia minora (inner lips). They typically appear as small, painless, raised spots measuring around 1–3 mm. They may appear individually but are more commonly seen in clusters or in a symmetrical pattern.

Fordyce spots are a normal anatomical variation, not a disease or infection.

Understanding the difference: Inner vs. Outer Labia

The appearance of Fordyce spots can vary depending on their location:

Labia majora (outer labia)
The skin here is thicker and more similar to normal skin elsewhere on the body. Fordyce spots may appear like small pores or subtle bumps and may feel slightly firmer to the touch.

Labia minora (inner labia)
The inner labia have thinner, more delicate skin. In this area, Fordyce spots often appear more prominent or yellowish and become easier to see when the skin is stretched.

Because the vulva contains many normal anatomical variants, it is important to distinguish Fordyce spots from other benign conditions. For example:

  • Vestibular papillomatosis consists of soft, finger-like projections found within the vaginal vestibule and is also a normal variant
  • Genital warts are caused by HPV and tend to have an irregular surface and different growth pattern

A clinical examination is essential to confirm the diagnosis before any treatment is considered.

Why consider Fordyce spots treatment?

Many people choose not to treat Fordyce spots at all, as they pose no health risk. However, we respect patient autonomy and understand that comfort, confidence, and wellbeing matter.

Patients who choose treatment usually do so for one of the following reasons:

  1. Cosmetic or confidence concerns
The appearance of the spots may cause self-consciousness, particularly during intimacy.

  2. Local irritation
Occasionally, friction from clothing or sexual activity can make the area feel irritated, prompting a desire for smoother skin.

Our Approach to Treatment

If you are considering treatment, our specialists will guide you through your options in a supportive, non-judgemental environment.

Where treatment is chosen, one option we offer is hyfrecation. This is a well-established technique used in genital dermatology to treat small, superficial lesions. It uses a very fine, low-power electrical current to precisely target individual sebaceous glands while minimising impact on surrounding tissue.

What to expect during the journey

Consultation
Your journey begins with a thorough in-person assessment. One of our clinicians will examine the area to confirm the diagnosis and ensure that the lesions are Fordyce spots rather than a condition requiring different management.

The Procedure
Your comfort is a priority. Local anaesthesia is used, either as a numbing cream or a small injection, depending on the area being treated. The hyfrecation device is then used to treat each spot individually. The procedure is usually quick and performed in the clinic.

Patch Test
For some patients, particularly when treating delicate vulval skin, we may recommend a patch test. This involves treating a small area first to assess healing and cosmetic outcome before proceeding with more extensive treatment.

Recovery and aftercare
Healing is usually straightforward. Immediately after treatment, the area may resemble small, shallow grazes. You will be provided with a tailored aftercare pack and clear written instructions.

We typically advise:

  • Gentle hygiene only, avoiding perfumed products or excessive washing
  • Short-term saline soaks or compresses if advised
  • Avoiding friction, strenuous exercise, or sexual activity for a short period while healing occurs

Most patients find that the skin heals well within one to two weeks, often leaving a smoother surface.

A follow-up appointment is included to ensure healing is progressing as expected.
