Frequently Asked Questions

About The Test

How do you test for Trichomoniasis?
K
L

A urine sample is required for male patients, and a high vaginal swab (self-taken) is required for female patients. Oral and rectal swabs are available if the clinician believes this is appropriate for you, these can also be self-taken. Samples are then processed using PCR technology to locate the presence of the Trichomonas vaginalis parasite.

What is the window period for Trichomoniasis?
K
L

Generally, it takes about 5 to 28 days after exposure for Trichomoniasis to be detectable using PCR technology.

However, if you are experiencing symptoms of Trichomoniasis, we encourage you to get tested as soon as possible.

Will I need to be examined?
K
L

An examination will be offered to you if you are experiencing symptoms. This allows the clinician to assess the extent of your symptoms and ensure there are no any secondary complications.

Although an examination may be recommended, this is entirely your decision. Your clinician will explain everything clearly.

How accurate is the Trichomoniasis test?
K
L

When a high-vaginal swab is used, the Trichomoniasis test has a sensitivity (number of true positives) rate of 98.5% and a specificity (number of true negatives) rate of 99.9%.

When a urine sample is used, the Trichomoniasis test has a sensitivity (number of true positives) rate of 97.2% and a specificity (number of true negatives) rate of 99.9%.

Can another infection be mistaken as Trichomoniasis?
K
L

No. DNA PCR testing is highly sensitive and accurate and will not confuse one infection with another.
