Genital Warts vs Skin Tags

Discovering a lump or bump in the genital area can be worrying. It’s completely natural to feel anxious and want to understand what it might be. Two common causes are genital warts and skin tags. While they can appear similar at first glance, they are very different conditions, each with its own cause and management options. This blog post aims to provide clear, accurate information about genital warts vs skin tags, helping you recognise the differences and feel confident about the next steps for your health.

What are Genital Warts?

Genital warts are small, fleshy growths that appear on or around the genitals, anus, or groin. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common sexually transmitted infection (STI). Certain types of HPV cause genital warts, while other types are associated with cervical and other cancers. It’s important to remember that having genital warts does not automatically mean you have a high-risk strain of HPV, and having a high-risk strain does not mean you will definitely develop cancer.

Appearance of Genital Warts:

  • Skin-coloured, white, or slightly darker than surrounding skin.
  • May appear as single bumps or in clusters, sometimes with a cauliflower-like appearance.
  • Size can range from pinhead-sized to several millimetres.
  • Often rough to the touch.
  • May cause itching, burning, or discomfort, though many people remain asymptomatic.

What are Skin Tags?

Skin tags are benign, non-cancerous growths that usually develop in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing. They are very common and generally harmless. Skin tags are not caused by a virus or infection and are not sexually transmitted.

Appearance of Skin Tags:

  • Skin-coloured or slightly darker.
  • Soft and fleshy, often attached to the skin by a small stalk.
  • Typically small, ranging from a few millimetres to about half a centimetre in size.
  • Usually smooth to the touch.
  • Generally painless unless irritated by rubbing or friction.

Location Genitals, pubic area, anus, groin Areas of skin friction such as neck, armpits, groin
Symptoms Itching, burning, discomfort (sometimes none) Usually painless, may be irritated
Health Risks Some HPV types linked to cancer None

What to Do If You Find a Lump or Bump

If you notice any new lumps, bumps, or skin changes in your genital area, it’s essential to consult with a Specialist for a proper diagnosis. Attempting to self-diagnose based on online information can be misleading and delay appropriate treatment.

At our clinic, we offer comprehensive services for diagnosing and managing genital lumps and bumps, including:

  • Genital Dermatology Consultation: A thorough examination and discussion of your concerns.
  • Online Genital Dermatology Consultation: Convenient option for initial assessment and advice.
  • STI Testing: To determine if the growths are caused by HPV or another infection.
  • Hyfrecation: A safe and effective procedure for removing skin tags and genital warts.

Hyfrecation for Lumps and Bumps

Hyfrecation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to remove unwanted skin lesions. It’s a time-tested and reliable method for treating both genital warts and skin tags. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, ensuring your comfort. For your convenience, we can provide a quote before the procedure, allowing the treatment to be carried out on the same day as your consultation. After the procedure, you will receive an aftercare pack, which may include antibiotics, skin wipes, gauze, and silver spray.

Our Patient Journey: Genital Dermatology (Lumps & Bumps)

We strive to make your experience as comfortable and informative as possible.

  1. Pre-Appointment: You’ll fill out a pre-appointment questionnaire to provide us with important information about your medical history and concerns. For same-day Hyfrecation, we’ll ask you to submit photos along with the questionnaire for our clinical team to review and provide you with a quote.
  2. During the Appointment: You’ll have a consultation with one of our Specialists, who will examine the area and discuss your treatment options. If you’ve already received a quote and are comfortable proceeding, the hyfrecation procedure can often be performed during the same visit.
  3. After the Appointment: You’ll receive a comprehensive aftercare pack and instructions to promote healing. A follow-up appointment is included within 4 weeks of the main procedure to ensure optimal results (unless otherwise agreed upon).
