Journey Overview
For patients who have filled out a pre-appointment questionnaire before booking and received a quote will be available for same day hyfrecation treatment.
#1 Pre-Appointment Questionnaire
Your journey starts by filling out our pre-appointment questionnaire. If you are interested in having your treatment on the same day as your consultation, we will ask you to submit photos along with the form.
#2 Receive a Quote
Once you have submitted your questionnaire and photos, our clinical team will review them. Following this review, we will provide you with a quote for the procedure ahead of your appointment.
#3 Consultation
During your in-person consultation, we will assess the area and discuss the hyfrecation procedure with you. This is the dedicated time to address any of your questions. We find that many patients have already been diagnosed elsewhere and are primarily seeking an effective treatment option.
#4 Procedure
If you decide to proceed, the treatment can typically be performed on the same day. We use local anaesthetic (either a numbing cream or an injection) to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Once the area is completely numb, the lesions are carefully removed using hyfrecation, which leaves behind smooth skin with minimal downtime.
#5 Follow Up
One follow-up appointment within 4 weeks is included with your treatment. This allows us to assess the healing process and manage any remaining lesions. After your procedure, we will also provide you with an aftercare pack that includes skin wipes and gauze.
Our Method of Treatment
While Hyfrecation has been an established treatment method for over 80 years, it is less well-known than Laser in the UK for treating skin lesions. Hyfrecation is a minor surgical procedure that uses electrocautery to burn off skin lesions, resulting in their immediate clearance. Carried out under local anaesthesia, Hyfrecation is a very safe and effective procedure. To achieve the best results, a touch-up may sometimes be needed a couple of weeks later.
The procedure leaves a small, raw area which typically heals within a few days. As with any medical procedure, it is essential to be aware of possible side effects. Potential short-term side effects include bleeding, bruising, soreness, and infection. Long-term side effects are rare but can include changes in skin colour, scarring, the development of neuralgic pain, or a loss of sensation in the treated area.

FAQs
When you arrive for your appointment, you will first have a consultation with your clinician. During this, your lesions will be reviewed and the procedure confirmed as appropriate.
If you have booked same-day treatment, we will then prepare you for the procedure. This includes explaining the process, completing consent, taking pre-procedure photographs where required, and applying a topical numbing agent in privacy.
After allowing time for the numbing cream to take effect (usually around 15–20 minutes), your clinician will check that the area is fully numb before proceeding with treatment.
Once the procedure is complete, you will be given clear aftercare advice and an aftercare pack to support healing.
Most patients find hyfrecation for genital skin tag removal very well tolerated. Your clinician will always check that the area is adequately numb before starting the procedure. You may feel some pressure or mild sensations, but significant pain is uncommon.
Yes. You are welcome to listen to your own music if that helps you feel more relaxed. Please let us know when booking or on arrival so we can accommodate this where possible. Many patients find the procedure quick and comfortable, and it is often completed sooner than expected.
It’s normal to experience some mild soreness, tenderness, or sensitivity at the treated site after the procedure. This usually settles within a few days. Simple pain relief, such as paracetamol, can be used if needed. Your clinician will provide specific aftercare advice to support healing.
We recommend reading the aftercare information provided, as this covers common questions and expected healing changes.
If you are concerned that something is not healing as expected, or if you experience increasing pain, redness, swelling, discharge, or bleeding, please contact the clinic to request a follow-up call or review. We are happy to reassess and provide further advice if needed.
We advise avoiding sexual activity, including masturbation, until healing is complete. This is usually around one week, but may vary depending on the area treated and individual healing. Having sex too soon can increase the risk of irritation, bleeding, infection, or scarring. Your clinician can advise you if a longer period of abstinence is recommended.
A follow-up appointment is routinely offered within 1–4 weeks after treatment. This allows your clinician to check healing, address any concerns, and treat any small residual lesions that may not have been apparent at the initial visit. It also provides an opportunity to ask further questions and ensure you are happy with the outcome.
Genital skin tag treatment is a straightforward procedure and can usually be arranged at a time that suits you. There is no medical urgency in most cases, as skin tags are benign. We encourage you to take time to decide whether treatment is right for you, particularly if the skin tags are not causing discomfort. A consultation allows you to discuss your concerns, understand the options, and proceed when you feel ready.
No. There are no safe or effective home remedies for removing genital skin tags.
If you notice any new or changing lesions in the genital area, it’s important to have them assessed by a healthcare professional to confirm the diagnosis. Attempting home treatments — including cutting, burning, squeezing, or using over-the-counter removal products — is strongly discouraged, as this can lead to bleeding, infection, scarring, or delayed diagnosis of other conditions.
If skin tags are bothersome, professional assessment and treatment is the safest approach.
To help your appointment and procedure go smoothly, we recommend the following:
Shower on the day of your appointment to reduce the risk of infection.
Plan to attend independently: Most patients are comfortable to travel home on their own after treatment.
Plan for light activity afterwards: Avoid heavy physical work, gym sessions, or strenuous exercise for 48 hours following the procedure.
Most people can return to normal daily activities straight after the procedure. If your job involves heavy physical work or significant friction to the treated area, you may wish to take some short rest time, which your Specialist can advise on.
Yes. You are welcome to bring a partner, friend, or family member to your appointment if you wish.
If you prefer to attend alone, please be reassured that our team is here to support you and ensure you feel comfortable throughout your visit. Clarewell Clinics aims to provide a safe, respectful, and supportive environment.
No special travel arrangements are usually required. Most patients are able to travel home independently. However, if you feel more comfortable being accompanied, you may arrange for a friend, partner, or family member to travel with you.
Coverage for genital skin tag treatment varies between insurance providers and policies. We recommend checking directly with your insurer and obtaining written confirmation of cover before your appointment to avoid any misunderstandings.
Many patients choose to self-fund their treatment.
