I've been trying to get my coil replaced since May on the NHS, but they couldn't do it as my threads have been cut too short. Waiting lists for NHS gynae appointment are insane (~1 year) so after some deliberating I decided to go private. I chose Clarewell Clinics as they had great reviews and also compared to other clinics, were a lot more reasonably priced. I booked an ultrasound guided coil removal in hopes that Dr. Elena would be able to do it without needing to go down a more invasive route. Thankfully, she did it with ease and also replaced it with a Mirena coil (on the NHS they had told me my uterus was too small so had to go with Kyleena). It was such a more pleasant experience than when I did it on the NHS. Dr. Elena and Yemi kept me comfortable and eased my anxiety the whole way through the process. The pain relief options were also better- air and gas was a lifesaver! I could still feel the pain but it was milder and so much more bareable than the insertion I had 5 years ago. It was over quickly and I was sent away with a heat pack to ease the cramping afterwards. Thank you so much Dr Elena, Yemi and also Ryaan for being a friendly face in the reception. I would thoroughly recommend Clarewell Clinics :)

I had a mirena replacement with Elena, supported by Ryan. I have previously had bad experiences, but the approach here and the pain management meant if I had to come back next week for another one, I’d do it. I arrived feeling sick and shaking but Ryan put me at ease, Elena did a fantastic and quick job and the gas and air made a huge difference, I barely felt anything. The whole team were friendly and welcoming and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. I had an injection and she didn’t wait for pain to come to manage it, it was managed upfront. I’m so incredibly grateful, thank you. Ryan and Elena are a fantastic team

Mr Aaron Williams saw us while we were visiting London from the US and he treated us well, with compassion and professionalism. Seeing him helped put us at ease for the rest of our trip, which ended up being great.

I had a copper coil removal yesterday with Dr Praveen Jayadeva. If you are at all nervous about an iud fitting or removal, I couldn't recommend this clinic enough. I had a very painful experience at a different clinic that made me really scared about the removal procedure. They really take the time to talk you through what's going to happen and what type of pain relief options you have. They were so friendly and comforting (both the doctor and the amazing assistant) and procedure was so quick. They even offer you tea and biscuits afterwards. Really fantastic and professional clinic!

I had a coil done here. It was an amazing experience, really worth the money paid. The doctor took the time to go through the process and all the options in detail. I felt prepared and well cared for. I had numbing gel and spray and also gas and air. The actual coil fitting was less then 5 minutes. I felt a little discomfort, but the gas and air managed this very well. The team were all very supportive and caring. My coil lasts for 5 years, I'm very happy with my experience. Could not recommend enough.

Dr. Malu was able to help me fully understand and put into context my concerns surrounding HPV, which at times can feel like a confusing subject. His ability to listen and understand my concerns with empathy and without judgement was very helpful. I am grateful for the expertise and care given by Dr. Malu and the staff at his clinic. The team provides a very professional and comfortable experience.

Fantastic and caring team from booking process, reception, appointment and billing. Went for a coil removal. They had ultrasound and gas for pain management (when I checked it seemed they were the only clinic that offered this!!). 100% recommend. Especially if you’re getting a coil, want to make sure you do it with a top professional team. I inserted it elsewhere and it was a barbaric procedure for me, insanely painful and just awful. So save yourself unnecessary trauma/pain

I had such a great experience at Clarewell Clinic. I was extremely nervous about the pain before my copper IUD fitting, but Dr Praveen Jayadeva explained everything clearly throughout the appointment and made me feel completely comfortable. I was given pain relief and the fitting was honestly so much easier than I expected — I barely felt any pain at all. Yasmin was also incredibly lovely and reassuring throughout. I’m genuinely so happy I chose Clarewell and would definitely recommend them. 10/10.

FAQs

How do you test for Chancroid Testing?

Chancroid is tested by taking a swab from an active genital sore or ulcer. The sample is analysed using a PCR test, which detects the DNA of the bacteria that causes the infection.

Because chancroid is rare in the UK and its symptoms can resemble other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), testing for conditions such as herpes or syphilis may also be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.

How can I prepare for my Chancroid Testing?

Preparing for a chancroid test is simple and does not require fasting or any dietary changes.

For the most accurate results:

• Avoid applying creams, lotions, or ointments to the affected area for 24 hours before your appointment.
• If additional routine STI testing is advised, avoid passing urine for around two hours before your visit.

It is also helpful to know when your symptoms started and whether you have had any recent sexual partners, as this information can guide your assessment.

What is the window period for Chancroid Testing?

Chancroid is most accurately tested once a painful sore or ulcer is present.

Symptoms usually appear 3–7 days after exposure but can take up to 14 days. If you have recently been exposed but have no symptoms, monitor the area for two weeks and seek assessment if a sore or painful lump develops.

What is the science behind how the Chancroid Testing works?

Chancroid testing detects Haemophilus ducreyi, the bacteria responsible for the infection.

A swab is taken from an active ulcer and analysed using PCR (polymerase chain reaction), which identifies the bacteria's DNA. PCR is highly sensitive and can detect very small amounts of genetic material, making it more reliable than traditional bacterial culture methods.

How accurate is this the Chancroid Testing?

PCR testing is the most accurate method for diagnosing chancroid and is more sensitive than older culture techniques.

Accuracy is highest when a swab is taken from an active sore or ulcer. If results are negative but symptoms continue, further assessment or repeat testing may be recommended to investigate other possible causes. No test is 100% accurate, and results should always be interpreted alongside the clinical assessment.

When should I get tested for Chancroid Testing?

You should seek testing as soon as possible if you develop painful genital sores, ulcers, or swollen lumps after sexual contact.

Symptoms typically appear within 3–7 days of exposure but may take up to 14 days. Testing is most effective while an active sore is present.

Because chancroid is rare in the UK, testing is usually considered alongside investigations for other conditions that cause genital ulcers.

Will I need a physical examination?

Yes. A physical examination is usually necessary because chancroid is diagnosed by assessing and swabbing an active sore or ulcer.

The examination allows the clinician to collect the most appropriate sample and determine whether additional tests are needed.

Are there variations of this test that I should be aware of?

The main test is a PCR swab taken from an active ulcer, which detects the DNA of Haemophilus ducreyi.

Older culture methods are available but are used less often because the bacteria are difficult to grow in the laboratory. In many cases, additional samples or tests may be recommended to investigate other causes of genital ulcers, such as herpes and syphilis.

How will I receive my Chancroid Testing results?

Your chancroid test results can be sent to you by text message or email, depending on your preference.

What do my Chancroid Testing results mean?

Your results will usually be reported as:

• Not detected (negative): No chancroid bacteria were found in the sample.
• Detected (positive): Chancroid bacteria were identified, and treatment is recommended.

A negative result does not completely exclude chancroid if the sample was taken after antibiotics or once the ulcer has started healing. Results should be interpreted alongside the clinical assessment.

Do I have to take any precautions whilst waiting for my Chancroid Testing results?

Yes. Avoid vaginal, anal, and oral sex until you receive your results and complete any recommended treatment if you test positive.

You should also:

• Keep any sores clean and dry.
• Avoid touching or picking at ulcers, as this can delay healing and increase the risk of infection.

If your symptoms worsen or you develop increasing pain, swelling, or fever, seek medical advice promptly.

What happens if my Chancroid Testing is positive?

Chancroid is a bacterial infection that is usually treated successfully with antibiotics.

You should avoid all sexual contact until you have completed treatment, any sores have fully healed, and your clinician has advised it is safe to resume sexual activity. Recent sexual partners should also be informed so they can be assessed and treated if necessary, helping to prevent reinfection and further spread.

A follow-up review may be recommended to confirm that the infection has resolved.

Do I have to tell my partner if I test positive for Chancroid Testing?

Yes. Anyone you have had sexual contact with recently may have been exposed, even if they have no symptoms.

Partners should be informed so they can be tested and treated if needed. You should avoid sexual contact until you and any affected partners have completed treatment and your symptoms have resolved.

Can I get a certificate of my Chancroid Testing results?

Yes. A certificate or medical letter can be provided if you need official documentation of your test results.

If you require a certificate, let the clinic know at your appointment. Proof of identity may be needed to prepare the document.
