It is incredibly common to feel a sense of relief once you have received a diagnosis and started treatment for a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Most people expect their symptoms to vanish almost immediately. However, for some, the journey to full recovery isn’t always a straight line. If you find yourself thinking, “I have been treated but am still experiencing symptoms”, please know that you are not alone, and there are very clear clinical reasons why this might be happening.
Our priority is to ensure you feel supported and informed as we navigate these next steps together. Understanding why symptoms persist can help reduce anxiety and guide us toward the right solution.
5 Reasons Why Your Symptoms Haven’t Cleared Yet
There are several reasons why you might still feel “off” even after completing a course of antibiotics or antiviral medication.
Your Body Needs Time to Heal
Just because the bacteria or virus has been cleared from your system doesn’t mean the inflammation disappears instantly. STIs can cause irritation to the delicate linings of the urethra, cervix, or rectum. Much like a grazed knee takes time to scab over and heal after the dirt has been washed away, your internal tissues need a recovery period. It is not unusual to experience mild lingering sensations for a few days—or occasionally a week or two—after treatment.
The Possibility of Re-infection
For treatment to be successful long-term, any recent sexual partners must also be tested and treated. If you finish your medication but have unprotected contact with a partner who hasn’t been treated, the infection can pass straight back to you. We usually recommend abstaining from any sexual contact (including oral sex) until both you and your partner have completed treatment and any follow-up period advised by our Specialists.
Co-infections and “Hidden” Culprits
Sometimes, a standard STI screen looks for the most common infections, such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea. However, symptoms like discharge or discomfort can also be caused by other organisms, such as Mycoplasma genitalium or Ureaplasma. These often require different types of antibiotics. If your initial symptoms haven’t cleared, it may be that there was a second, underlying infection that wasn’t covered by the first round of medication.
Antibiotic Resistance
In recent years, certain infections—most notably Gonorrhoea—have become more resistant to standard antibiotics. While our Specialists follow the latest UK national guidelines to prescribe the most effective treatments, there are rare cases where the infection does not respond as expected. This is why reporting persistent symptoms is vital.
Non-STI Related Issues
Genital symptoms are not always caused by STIs. Conditions like thrush (yeast infections), bacterial vaginosis (BV), or even skin irritation (dermatitis) from soaps or detergents can mimic STI symptoms. In some cases, the antibiotics used to treat an STI can actually trigger a bout of thrush by changing the natural balance of bacteria in the body.
Next Steps: Managing Persistent Symptoms
If you are concerned because you feel I have been treated but am still experiencing symptoms, the first step is to stay calm and reach out for a follow-up.
Book a Follow-Up Discussion
At our clinic, we offer dedicated follow-up support. If you have already had an appointment and are concerned about your recovery, you can request a follow-up discussion. This allows our Specialists to review your case, discuss your recent results, and determine if further action is needed.
Test of Cure
For certain infections, or if symptoms persist, we may recommend a “test of cure”. This involves repeating the test after a specific period (usually two to four weeks, depending on the infection) to ensure the treatment has been 100% successful. Testing too early can sometimes result in a “false positive” because the test detects dead fragments of the DNA of the infection, so timing is key.
Advanced Diagnostics
If standard treatments haven’t worked, we can utilise more specialist testing. We work with leading UK laboratories, such as Micropathology and TDL, to perform highly specific PCR tests or cultures that can identify resistant strains or rarer organisms.
