Hepatitis C Antibody Testing

An instant Hepatitis C test involves taking a small blood sample, usually from a finger prick. The sample is used to detect antibodies to the hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV), with results available in around 30 minutes.

If the result is reactive, a follow-up PCR test is recommended to confirm whether there is a current active infection.

Instant Hepatitis C antibody tests are highly accurate when used after the appropriate antibody window period.

A reactive result indicates previous exposure to the virus but does not confirm an active infection. A PCR test is required to determine whether the virus is currently present. Testing too soon after exposure may produce a false-negative result because antibodies have not yet developed.

For the most reliable result, an instant Hepatitis C antibody test should be performed 12 weeks after potential exposure.

If your exposure was more recent, or you have symptoms such as jaundice, persistent fatigue, or nausea, seek medical advice. You may need additional testing or a different testing schedule.

If exposure was within the previous few weeks, an HCV RNA (PCR) test may detect infection earlier than an antibody test.

A physical examination is not usually required for an instant Hepatitis C test.

Yes. The three main Hepatitis C tests provide different information:

• Laboratory antibody test: Also detects anti-HCV antibodies and may be used instead of a rapid test in some settings.
• PCR test: Detects the virus itself to confirm whether you have a current active infection.

Yes. After a recent Hepatitis C infection, it can take several weeks for your body to produce detectable antibodies. During this early "window period," an HCV RNA (PCR) test can detect the virus sooner than an antibody test. This type of test may be recommended if you have had a recent high-risk exposure or if you have a weakened immune system, as antibody tests may be less reliable in some immunocompromised individuals.

You can receive your test results by either text or email.

The results will be either NOT Detected (i.e. negative) or DETECTED (i.e. positive).

In some cases, the test may come back as equivocal which means that it was not possible to gain a conclusive result from the sample given. If this happens, we will request another sample free of charge.

Yes. While waiting for your results, take steps to reduce the risk of passing Hepatitis C to others.

• Do not share items that may come into contact with blood, such as razors, toothbrushes, or nail clippers.
• Keep any cuts or wounds covered with a waterproof dressing.
• Do not share needles or other injecting equipment.
• Avoid donating blood, organs, or semen until your status is confirmed.

Although the risk of sexual transmission is generally low, using condoms until your results are confirmed is recommended.

A positive instant Hepatitis C antibody test means you have been exposed to the virus at some point. It does not confirm that you have a current infection.

A follow-up PCR (Hepatitis C RNA) test is needed to determine whether the virus is still present. If an active infection is confirmed, treatment with direct-acting antiviral medication is highly effective and cures most people within a few months.

You are not legally required to tell your partner if you test positive for Hepatitis C. However, it is recommended that current or recent partners may wish to discuss testing with their healthcare provider, particularly if there has been potential blood exposure.

Although sexual transmission is uncommon, it can occur in some circumstances. If you are unsure how to have this conversation, your healthcare provider can offer advice and discuss options for confidential partner notification.

Yes. A certificate of your Hepatitis C test results can be provided if required for official purposes.
