Journey Overview

anal warts treatment

For patients who have filled out a pre-appointment questionnaire before booking and received a quote will be available for same day hyfrecation treatment.

#1 Pre-Appointment Questionnaire

Your journey starts by filling out our pre-appointment questionnaire. If you are interested in having your treatment on the same day as your consultation, we will ask you to submit photos along with the form.

#2 Receive a Quote

Once you have submitted your questionnaire and photos, our clinical team will review them. Following this review, we will provide you with a quote for the procedure ahead of your appointment.

#3 Consultation

During your in-person consultation, we will assess the area and discuss the hyfrecation procedure with you. This is the dedicated time to address any of your questions. We find that many patients have already been diagnosed elsewhere and are primarily seeking an effective treatment option.

#4 Procedure

If you decide to proceed, the treatment can typically be performed on the same day. We use local anaesthetic (either a numbing cream or an injection) to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Once the area is completely numb, the lesions are carefully removed using hyfrecation, which leaves behind smooth skin with minimal downtime.

#5 Follow Up

One follow-up appointment within 4 weeks is included with your treatment. This allows us to assess the healing process and manage any remaining lesions. After your procedure, we will also provide you with an aftercare pack that includes skin wipes and gauze.

Our Method of Treatment

While Hyfrecation has been an established treatment method for over 80 years, it is less well-known than Laser in the UK for treating skin lesions. Hyfrecation is a minor surgical procedure that uses electrocautery to burn off skin lesions, resulting in their immediate clearance. Carried out under local anaesthesia, Hyfrecation is a very safe and effective procedure. To achieve the best results, a touch-up may sometimes be needed a couple of weeks later.

The procedure leaves a small, raw area which typically heals within a few days. As with any medical procedure, it is essential to be aware of possible side effects. Potential short-term side effects include bleeding, bruising, soreness, and infection. Long-term side effects are rare but can include changes in skin colour, scarring, the development of neuralgic pain, or a loss of sensation in the treated area.

Patient Feedback

FAQs

How do I know if I am eligible for treatment?

Final eligibility is confirmed during your in-person consultation. However, completing our pre-appointment questionnaire — and submitting photos where requested — allows our clinical team to assess suitability in advance and gives a good indication of whether treatment is likely to be appropriate.

Can I have this treatment if I have been treated before?

Yes. We regularly see patients who have previously undergone treatments such as laser therapy or topical treatments and are seeking further care due to recurrence or unsatisfactory results.
Hyfrecation can usually be performed safely in these cases and often achieves excellent outcomes.

From what age can I get this treatment?

We provide this treatment for adults aged 18 years and over.

Are there any health conditions that might stop me from getting this treatment?

In some situations, treatment may need to be delayed or adjusted to ensure safety and optimal healing. These include:
• Active infection of the surrounding skin
• A current outbreak of genital herpes
• Localised inflammatory skin conditions (for example, eczema or dermatitis) affecting the treatment area
• Poorly controlled diabetes
• Poorly controlled high blood pressure
These conditions do not usually prevent treatment altogether but may need to be managed first. This will be discussed during your consultation so that treatment can proceed safely.

What should I expect after my appointment?

You may experience mild soreness, redness, or sensitivity at the treated area. This is normal and usually settles within a few days. Standard painkillers such as paracetamol can be used if needed. Some light scabbing or oozing can also occur as part of normal healing.

How long will it take for my side effects to go away?

Most short-term effects, such as soreness or redness, improve within a few days. The treated skin usually heals over 7–10 days. Healing time can vary depending on the number and size of lesions treated and individual skin healing.

What do I do if I think I have a problem after the appointment?

We recommend reading your aftercare information carefully, as it answers many common questions.
If you are concerned about pain, swelling, discharge, signs of infection, or anything does not feel right, please contact the clinic to request a follow-up call. Our team will advise you promptly.

Do I need to take any special precautions at home (in regards to children, pets)?

No special precautions are required. The treatment area should be kept clean and dry, but there is no risk to children or pets. Dispose of any used dressings or wipes as advised in your aftercare instructions.

Is there anything I can do to help the treatment work better?

Yes. You can support healing by:
• Following the aftercare instructions provided
• Keeping the area clean and dry
• Avoiding friction or irritation while healing
• Not picking at scabs or treated areas
• Avoiding smoking, as it can slow healing
Early assessment of any new or persistent lumps also helps prevent recurrence.

How soon after my appointment can I have sex?

It is advised to avoid sex and masturbation until the treated area has fully healed, usually around 14 days. Sexual activity before healing is complete can increase the risk of infection, bleeding, or scarring.

Can I take immune boosting supplements to help?

There is no strong evidence that supplements significantly speed clearance of HPV. Maintaining general health — including good sleep, nutrition, and avoiding smoking — is more important.
If you choose to take supplements, they should not replace medical treatment. Please inform your clinician if you are taking any regular supplements or medications.

Will I require a follow up appointment after my appointment?

Yes. All patients are offered a follow-up appointment within 1–4 weeks of treatment.
This allows your clinician to:
• Check healing
• Treat any residual or newly visible lesions
• Answer any further questions
• Sometimes a small remaining lesion may be visible to the clinician even if you are unaware of it.

What are the chances this Anal Warts Treatment will come back after treatment?

Recurrence is possible. Treatment removes visible warts, but HPV can remain dormant in the skin for some time. If warts do return, they are often smaller and easier to treat.
Recurrences become less likely over time as the immune system suppresses the virus. Early treatment and follow-up help achieve long-term clearance.

How can I prepare for my appointment?

To help your appointment go smoothly, we recommend the following:
• Have a shower on the day of your appointment to reduce the risk of infection
• Wear comfortable clothing
• Most people are able to drive themselves home after treatment
• Plan to avoid heavy physical activity, including gym or physically demanding work, for 48 hours after the procedure

Will I need to take time off after my appointment?

Most people can return to normal daily activities the same day or the following day, provided their work is not physically demanding. If your job involves heavy lifting or prolonged physical activity, short-term adjustment may be advised.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. You are welcome to bring a partner, friend, or family member with you.

What travel arrangements should I make for after the appointment?

No special travel arrangements are usually required. Most patients are able to travel home independently after treatment. If you would feel more comfortable being accompanied, you may choose to arrange this in advance.

Will my insurance cover this procedure?

Coverage varies between insurance providers and policies. We recommend checking directly with your insurer and obtaining written confirmation of coverage before your appointment.
In most cases, patients choose to self-fund their treatment.

When is the best time to book my Anal Warts Treatment treatment?

Anal warts treatment is a straightforward procedure and can usually be booked at a time that suits you. There is no medical requirement to wait, but we recommend that you take some time to consider your decision and feel confident about proceeding with treatment.
Some people prefer to book treatment sooner to relieve symptoms or prevent warts from spreading, while others choose to plan around work, travel, or personal commitments. During your consultation, we can discuss timing and whether same-day treatment is appropriate for you.

Is there anything I can do at home if I have Anal Warts Treatment?

No. There are no proven home remedies that safely or effectively remove anal warts.
It is strongly discouraged to attempt any form of home treatment, including cutting, burning, squeezing, or applying over-the-counter wart products. These methods can damage delicate skin, increase the risk of infection, scarring, or bleeding, and may worsen symptoms.
If you notice new lumps or changes around the anal area, the safest approach is to have them assessed by a healthcare professional to confirm the diagnosis and discuss appropriate treatment options.

How will the appointment work?

When you arrive, you will first have a consultation with your clinician. The area will be assessed and the treatment plan confirmed.
If you have booked same-day treatment, we will then prepare you for the procedure. This includes reviewing and signing the consent form, taking any required pre-procedure photographs, and applying a local anaesthetic (numbing cream) in privacy.
After allowing approximately 15–20 minutes for the anaesthetic to take effect, we will check that the area is fully numb before carefully removing the lesions using hyfrecation.
Once the procedure is complete, you will be given clear aftercare advice and an aftercare pack containing items to support healing.

Will the procedure hurt?

Most patients find hyfrecation for anal warts very well tolerated. Your clinician will ensure the area is fully numb before starting the procedure, and discomfort during treatment is usually minimal.

Can I listen to my music during the procedure?

Yes, absolutely. You are welcome to listen to your own music if this helps you feel more relaxed. Please let us know at the time of booking or when you arrive so we can accommodate this.
Many patients are surprised at how quick and straightforward the procedure feels, and the time often passes faster than expected.
