FAQs
The GyneFix coil fitting involves a consultation with one of our Specialists to discuss your medical history and suitability. If appropriate, the procedure involves inserting the small, frame-free coil into the uterus. Local anaesthetic is usually used to minimise discomfort. For a replacement, the old coil is removed, and the new one is inserted in the same appointment. We ensure you’re comfortable throughout the process and provide aftercare advice.
Some patients find the GyneFix coil fitting or replacement uncomfortable, while others experience more pain. Pain levels vary from person to person. We offer several pain relief options during the procedure, including local anaesthetic gel, local anaesthetic spray, and Entonox (gas and air). For ultrasound-guided coil procedures, a cervical block is also available. We understand that pain is a significant concern, and our Specialists will discuss pain management options with you before the procedure to make you as comfortable as possible.
Whether you can listen to music during your GyneFix coil fitting or replacement depends on the clinic's policy and the practicalities of the procedure. It's best to check with our Specialists beforehand. They can advise you on what's possible and what will ensure the procedure goes smoothly and safely for you.
Yes, you can certainly request an STI test during your GyneFix coil fitting or replacement appointment. Our Specialists will conduct a risk assessment and offer testing as appropriate.
If your GyneFix coil fitting or replacement doesn't go as planned, our Specialists will discuss the next steps with you. This might involve further investigation to understand why the procedure was unsuccessful, or exploring alternative contraception methods that might be more suitable for you. We'll ensure you receive the necessary support and guidance throughout the process and are here to address any concerns you may have. If appropriate, we may offer a repeat procedure, or refer you to another Specialist if needed. Your wellbeing is our priority, and we'll work with you to find the best solution for your contraceptive needs.
It's a good idea to bring a sanitary towel with you to your GyneFix coil fitting or replacement appointment, as you may experience some light bleeding afterwards. However, you shouldn't use tampons or menstrual cups for the first few days.
To prepare for your GyneFix coil fitting or replacement, it's helpful to know what to expect. You'll start with a consultation to discuss the procedure, your medical history, and address any questions or concerns you may have. If you're having a new coil fitted on the same day as your consultation, our Specialists may ask you to fill out a pre-appointment questionnaire.
During the procedure, we will offer pain relief options such as a local anaesthetic gel or spray. For ultrasound-guided procedures, a cervical block may be used. Entonox (gas and air) is also available.
After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort, so we'll provide pain relief medication to take home. Unless you experience signs of infection or severe pain, a follow-up appointment isn't usually needed. However, we're always here to help if you have any concerns.
If you'd like to discuss this further or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us, or book an appointment with our Specialists.
Whether you need time off for a GyneFix coil fitting or replacement varies from person to person. Some people feel well enough to return to their usual activities immediately, while others prefer to take a day to rest. You might experience some cramping or discomfort after the procedure, so it's a good idea to plan ahead and listen to your body. If you have a physically demanding job, you might want to consider taking a day off. Our Specialists can discuss this with you during your consultation and provide personalised advice based on your individual circumstances.
Yes, you are welcome to bring someone with you to your GyneFix coil fitting or replacement appointment. Having a friend, partner, or family member present can provide support and reassurance during the procedure. Please be aware that they may be asked to wait outside the procedure room during the fitting itself, depending on the clinic's policy and the space available.
After your GyneFix coil fitting or replacement, most patients feel well enough to travel home independently. However, you might prefer to have someone accompany you, especially if you're feeling anxious about the procedure. Consider your pain relief options – if you choose a stronger pain relief method, it might be best not to drive immediately afterwards. Public transport or a ride from a friend or family member might be a better option in that case. Our Specialists can discuss pain management with you during your consultation, so you can plan your travel accordingly.
After your GyneFix coil fitting or replacement, you might experience some cramping or discomfort, similar to period pain. This usually settles down within a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief, like paracetamol or ibuprofen. You may also have some light bleeding or spotting for a few days or weeks after the procedure.
It's important to check that you can feel the threads of the coil, as our Specialists will show you how to do, to ensure it's still in place.
If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, a fever, or think you might have an infection, please contact us or your local NHS healthcare provider right away. A follow-up appointment isn't routinely needed unless you have any concerns, but our Specialists are always here to help if you need us.
Except for surgical abortions, a follow up appointment is not usually required after a coil fitting or replacement unless there is a sign of infection or severe pain.
It's generally advised to wait for 24 hours after your GyneFix coil fitting or replacement before having sex. This allows the coil to settle and reduces the risk of infection. However, our Specialists can provide more tailored advice based on your individual circumstances during your appointment.
If you think you might be pregnant, it's important to take a pregnancy test to confirm. You can purchase these from most pharmacies or supermarkets, or our Specialists can arrange one for you. If the test is positive, discuss your options with our Specialists as soon as possible. They can provide guidance and support tailored to your individual circumstances and preferences.
After a GyneFix coil fitting or replacement, it's generally advised to avoid using tampons and menstrual cups for the first few weeks. This allows the uterus to settle and reduces the risk of infection or dislodging the coil. Our Specialists usually recommend using sanitary pads during this initial period. Once you've had a follow-up appointment and everything is healing well, you can discuss resuming tampon or menstrual cup use with our team. They can provide personalised advice based on your individual circumstances.
The GyneFix coil is effective immediately after fitting or replacement. You won't need to use additional contraception.
After a GyneFix coil fitting, your periods may change. Some women experience heavier bleeding or longer periods, especially in the first few months. You might also have spotting between periods. These changes usually settle down within a few months as your body adjusts. If you have any concerns about your periods after the fitting, please consult with our Specialists.
